From Thoroughbreds to Ponies

Equine art is a specialty of Kathe Umlauf. From finished bronze to simple pencil sketches, she is able to sensitively capture the movement, grace and power of horses.  Her process starts with working from life, often seen modeling in clay at horse shows and events. From there she creates a completed sculpture, making the molds and "pulling the waxes", and doing the investment that end up being poured in bronze.  After the rough cast is returened to her, she welds and corrects any surface problems, then applies the patina and mounts them. She says she wants to be involved in as many stages of the process as possible in order to guranteee creative control.
