About the Artist
Kathe Umlauf captures the gesture of an animal quickly and spontaneously by working directly from life with a small amount of clay. She says this is the freshest way to get an immediate likeness, and to capture the emotional state of the animal in the truest fashion.
She supplements this loose way of working with close study of anatomy.
She also enjoys teaching, and currently divides her time between working in her studio and teaching art in various capacities as a Resident Artist in Pennsylvania public schools. She says she enjoys these opportunities to teach art within a regular curriculum classroom because it gives her a chance to show the students as well as the teachers the importance of art in developing the capacity to not only think, but to create, and find meaning in everyday activities.
